The Life is the autobiographical testimony of Flavius Josephus, one of the most important historical witnesses to the Jewish world of the first century.
A Jewish priest of distinguished priestly descent, a student of the Law, commander in Galilee, and witness to one of the greatest crises of the Jewish world, Flavius Josephus stood at the center of the events that led to the war against Rome and the destruction of Jerusalem.
Written in the later years of his life, this work is also a defense. Josephus answers his accusers, challenges rival versions of events, and seeks to explain the decisions he made while cities were divided, leaders struggled for power, and war became increasingly inevitable.
Throughout the narrative, the reader follows a man surrounded by conspiracies, ambushes, revolts, accusations, and shifting loyalties. Josephus attempts to contain conflict in Galilee, repeatedly escapes death, confronts political and military adversaries, and ultimately survives the war that devastated his homeland. After becoming a Roman prisoner, he would eventually live in Rome under the protection of Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian.
It is precisely this extraordinary position that makes his testimony so compelling: Josephus stood on both sides of a historic divide. He was a Jewish priest and commander, yet later became a Roman citizen and a man protected by the Flavian dynasty. He participated in the events and afterward became one of their most important historians.
